1.1 Location

Bahirdar is located in north western part of Ethiopia, in Amhara National Regional State, West Gojam Zone at a distance of 565 km from Addis Ababa. Its astronomical location is 11º38’ north latitude and 37º15’ east longitude.

1.2 Foundation

The city was founded in 1922. Bahirdar is one of the reform towns in the region and has a city administration, metropolitan administration consisting of municipality and nine urban and four rural kebelles. The town has Integrated Development Plan which was prepared in 2007.
