The built up area of Bahirdar city is 28,660 ha and it is a semi–circle shaped town, developed along the road to Gonder, Mota and Bure. Its altitude is 1830m above sea level; its mean annual temperature is 23.3ºC–29.7ºC; and mean annual rainfall is1437 mm and the prevailing wind direction during dry season is from north to east and during rainy season from north to west. The principal natural constraint for the physical expansion of the town is flooding and existence of hills, and the man made constraints are high tension lines.
