5.1 Infrastructure
Regarding infrastructure, the town has 4 main asphalt and gravel roads connecting it to different weredas in the zone, surrounding zones, towns in the region and Addis Ababa. The distribution of roads as per the type of construction materials shows that 100 km are gravel, 45 km asphalt, 30km cobbles stone and 21km compacted earth roads. In addition to these, the town gets 24 hours electric supply from the national grid, mobile and fixed telephone lines, and has internet services, and a postal service having 1800 boxes. The main water supply source of the town is potable underground water and is distribution by piped network and 61 public taps. The town has open and closed ditch pipes to discharge storm water.
5.2 Housing
There are 24,943 (Government 6,664 and private 18,279) houses built of different materials in Dessie town.
5.3 Transport
There is daily inter-urban transport service to and from Addis Ababa and other 12 towns. The town has a bus station. There are 75 Bajaj and 216 minibus taxies, and 152 horse-drawn carts for giving intra-urban transport service.
