Urban Economy and Role of the Town
The town serves as wereda administration and trade center. There are 28 manufacturing, 1643 wholesale and retail trades, two fuel stations and six garages in the town. There are four banks and two micro-finances giving services in the town. The major investment opportunities in the town are agro-industry processing and social services. Average annual revenue of the municipality within 2008-2012 was about 2.142 Million Birr and major sources of revenue were rent, tax and service charges.

Motta town gets construction materials, agricultural inputs, manufacturing and commercial products from Addis Ababa and grain products, livestock supply natural resources (fuel wood and charcoal) and labour from surrounding areas and financial facilities from the town itself.

There are three privately owned kindergartens; one government and one private primary (1-4 grade) schools, eight government junior secondary (1-8 grade) schools, two senior secondary schools, one preparatory, one TVET and two private colleges in Motta town.

Health
Regarding health services there are one government hospital, three health centers, eight government health posts and four private clinics in the town.

Municipal services
Motta town has town hall, public library, ambulance, abattoir for Christians, general market meeting three times a week on Wednesday, Saturdays and Tuesdays and cattle market meeting twice a week on Saturdayሰ and Tuesdayሰ and daily markets at two places.

Solid waste is collected by one horse drawn cart with door to door service and dumped in authorized open damp sites located in four places. One Micro and Small-Scale Enterprise association with 8 members is engaged in solid waste collection. There are six public toilets in the town and liquid waste is collected with vacuum truck rented from Bahirdar city and dumped in open dump site within the town.

The urban greenery in the town covers 5.14ha, street trees are also planted along 1.6 km of roads and forest are available in parts of the town. There is one park, one stadium, four playgrounds and one semi standardized hotel in the town. There are six churches for Orthodox Christians and one for Protestants and three Mosques
